Equine Therapy for Neurodiverse Youth

Equine-assisted therapy and ABA services for children and teens with autism, ADHD, and AUDHD, led by a dual-trained therapist in a calm, sensory-friendly environment.

What if therapy didn’t just talk about change… but helped your child practice it?

Equine-assisted therapy gives kids hands-on, real-world learning with a pony—where confidence, emotional regulation, communication, and boundaries happen in the moment, not just in conversation.

Some families choose it as ongoing therapy.
Others come for 5–10 focused sessions to work through areas that feel especially stuck or hard to reach in a traditional office setting.

It’s experiential. It’s active. It’s change in action.

And the best part?
We work alongside your child’s existing therapist—this is a powerful complement, not a replacement.

Bonus for parents: While your child is in session, our location puts you steps away from great shopping and dining.
Think: therapy session for your child + self-care or a mini date for you. Win-win.

This calming experience allows children to connect through movement, emotion, and presence — without pressure, performance, or needing to explain themselves with words.

What Is Equine Therapy for Neurodiverse Youth?

Equine-assisted therapy combines therapeutic techniques with guided interactions between clients and horses. At Transformative Growth, we offer a unique model tailored to neurodiverse children and teens, including those with autism, ADHD, and AUDHD (Autism + ADHD).
Through structured activities and gentle horse interaction, youth gain:
  • Emotional regulation and sensory grounding
  • Confidence and self-awareness
  • Improved communication and executive functioning
  • Safe, non-judgmental space to explore identity and expression
This model is particularly beneficial for clients who struggle with traditional therapy settings or who thrive in movement-based, experiential environments.

Personalized, Play-Based Equine Sessions

Each equine therapy session is tailored to your child’s goals, strengths, and needs. Using a blend of ABA techniques, relational activities, and natural horsemanship, sessions may include:

  • Groundwork and horse care routines

  • Movement-based emotional regulation strategies

  • Social learning through horse-led interaction

  • Executive functioning practice through responsibility and rhythm

  • Sensory integration activities

All sessions are held in a structured yet flexible environment that emphasizes consistency, safety, and growth.

Please note: Not every session in your child’s treatment plan will include equine-assisted activities. Your therapist will work with you to determine when and how equine sessions are incorporated based on your child’s goals and progress.

Why Horses?

Horses are emotionally attuned, highly sensitive animals that respond to energy, intention, and presence — not words. When neurodiverse youth interact with horses, they receive clear, non-verbal feedback that reflects their internal emotional state. This creates a powerful, non-judgmental opportunity to practice emotional regulation, self-awareness, and trust.

This equine-assisted model is especially effective for youth with autism, ADHD, and AUDHD, offering therapeutic support in a setting that feels natural, safe, and affirming.

During sessions, children and teens engage in structured, ground-based activities such as grooming, leading, and observing the horse. These interactions help build:

  • Confidence

  • Focus

  • Connection

They also reduce the pressure to mask, perform, or explain — allowing each youth to simply show up as they are.

This equine therapy for neurodiverse youth supports emotional growth through relationship, movement, and sensory grounding.

Yes! Our program is designed for neurodiverse youth, including those who are anxious, shy, nonverbal, or have sensory sensitivities. Our calm, affirming approach meets each child where they are.

Please plan to arrive 10–15 minutes early to allow time for check-in and orientation. This helps your child ease into the environment without feeling rushed.

Since sessions are non-riding, helmets are not required. However, safety gear is always available and can be used upon request.

That’s okay. We never force interaction. Some children benefit simply by being present and observing. Our approach is flexible and built around each child’s comfort level, sensory needs, and emotional readiness.

While meaningful moments can happen in a single session, equine-assisted therapy works best as an ongoing process. With consistent support, neurodiverse youth build trust, improve emotional regulation, and strengthen communication skills over time. Each session builds on the last to support lasting progress.
