Shanna Hoesktra is motivated and passionate about empowering families, children, and individuals to overcome personal obstacles to improve their happiness, functioning, and overall quality of life. Using clinically tested and evidenced-based interventions, Shanna has worked with hundreds of children, families, and individuals since starting her clinical work in 2005 in which she has had significant positive outcomes and long term success. Shanna has worked in school settings for many years, and has seen and counseled many children with several severe disabilities, including Autism and a variety of Behavioral Disorders. As a doctoral candidate at the University of Chicago, and expert in child/youth development & disorders, Shanna oversees the research and development of our child and youth therapeutic programs, such as the Innovations in Play Therapy program.
Shanna understands how important it is to collaborate and communicate with all the moving parts in an individual’s life in order to treat the whole person effectively. Because research shows that unhealthy relationships can cause both emotional and physical stress, whereas healthy relationships can enhance and improve overall well-being, Shanna offers family counseling, and individual counseling for anxiety, depression and relationship issues. Shanna has a variety of techniques that she uses based on meeting the client where they are at. She may use art therapy, play therapy, sand tray therapy, trauma therapy, mindfulness and relaxation techniques, cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and many other techniques and therapies to meet the clients needs.
Shanna is a licensed clinical social worker, licensed school social worker, as well as a qualified counselor supervisor in the state of IL. She is a doctoral candidate at the University of Chicago and currently holds a masters degree in social work from the University of Chicago in Illinois, and has had several trainings and certificates in a variety of mental health disorders.
