What is ABA Therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy is a scientifically proven method used to improve specific behaviors in individuals with autism, ADHD, AUDHD, and other developmental conditions. ABA therapy uses positive reinforcement to encourage desired behaviors while reducing those that are harmful or disruptive. We individualize every treatment plan around each client’s unique strengths and needs.

Key Components of ABA Therapy:

  • Behavioral Assessments: In-depth evaluations to identify strengths, challenges, and areas for skill-building.

  • Positive Reinforcement: Encouraging desired behaviors by rewarding positive actions.

  • Skill Development: Supporting communication, social interaction, executive functioning, and emotional regulation.

  • Family Involvement: Training and coaching caregivers to support consistency and progress at home.

  • Clinic-Based Flexibility: Offering in-office sessions and telehealth options designed to meet your family’s needs.

In fact, ABA therapy is effective for people of all ages and is especially impactful for neurodiverse youth. By focusing on measurable goals, ABA helps children and teens with autism, ADHD, and AUDHD gain independence, improve daily functioning, and achieve lasting progress.

ABA Therapy FAQ

Have questions about ABA therapy? Here are answers to the ones we hear most from families getting started.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is a scientifically proven, evidence-based approach used to improve communication, social skills, emotional regulation, daily living skills, and independent functioning. It works by using positive reinforcement to encourage desired behaviors while reducing those that are harmful or disruptive. Treatment is highly individualized and built around each child’s unique strengths, needs, and goals.

ABA therapy is designed for neurodiverse children and teens — particularly those with autism, ADHD, and AUDHD (autism + ADHD). It is effective across a wide range of ages and skill levels. If you’re unsure whether ABA is the right fit for your child, reach out and we’ll help you figure out the best path forward.

No — while ABA is widely known for its effectiveness with autism, it is also highly effective for children with ADHD, AUDHD, and other developmental conditions. Our team is experienced working across all of these presentations.

Every session is personalized to your child’s treatment plan. Sessions may include behavioral assessments, skill-building activities, communication practice, social interaction exercises, and emotional regulation strategies. Family involvement is a core part of our approach — we work with caregivers throughout the process to make sure progress continues at home too. We also offer a unique Equine ABA program that incorporates horses into the ABA process — a powerful option for children who thrive in outdoor, animal-assisted environments.

Yes — family involvement is central to everything we do. We provide parent and caregiver training to equip families with the tools to reinforce positive behaviors and support progress outside of sessions. We believe sustainable growth happens when the whole family is part of the process.

We offer clinic-based sessions at our office as well as telehealth ABA for families who need flexible access to care from home. We also offer school consultation to support learning and behavior growth in academic settings. For families interested in our Equine ABA program, sessions are held at our Oswego barn location — and for certain settings, our therapy pony can even come to you. At roughly the size of a large dog, our pony is easy to transport and can bring the magic of equine-assisted work directly to schools, events, or other locations. We’ll work with you to figure out the right setup for your child and family.

Yes — ABA therapy is typically covered by insurance for children with an autism diagnosis. Coverage varies by plan, so the best first step is to give us a call at (630) 423-6010 or email us at Contact@transformativegrowth.org and we’ll run a benefits check for you before getting started.

As a nonprofit, we’re committed to making sure cost is never a barrier to getting your child the support they need. Reach out and we’ll walk through your options together — we’ll do everything we can to make it work for your family’s situation.

Every child is different so there is no fixed timeline. Progress depends on your child’s goals, their current skill level, and how consistently therapy is reinforced at home. Your child’s treatment team will set measurable goals and check in regularly to track progress and adjust the plan as needed.

ABA therapy can help with a wide range of skills and challenges including communication, attention and focus, behavior management, emotional regulation, daily living skills, social interactions, peer relationships, impulse control, following instructions, flexibility in routines, motor skills, play skills, problem-solving, self-care routines, safety awareness, task completion, time management, and more.
